Is Your Home Ready for Winter?

Winter is coming. Now that the warm weather is disappearing and the cooler weather is settling in, it’s time to prepare to spend most of your time indoors. The fall is the perfect time to think about improvements that can be made to your home before the brutal winter weather comes along.

You may want to think about:

Ensuring the Outside Elements Don’t Come Inside

Your home might not be as well insulated as you think. Unless you have a newer home built with energy efficiency in mind, you could see the cost to keep your house warm increase dramatically in the winter. If your heating system is working overtime, it’s time to check for cracks and gaps. These are often found in the siding of your home, in your attic, and around windows and doors.

Old windows are especially known for letting cold air inside. Consider replacing both your windows and doors with energy-efficient, newer models.

Renovating Your Basement

With the holidays right around the corner, we start planning to spend time with family and friends. For some, this means guests will come in from out of town. Why not make your basement a warm place for family and friends to stay over the holidays? It is now commonplace to have an extra bedroom and bathroom in the basement, and your lower level could be a place both you and your guests enjoy with features like a kitchen, a recreation room, and/or a lounge seating area.

While you’re making your lower level feel luxurious, pay attention to the carpeting or flooring. New floors—whether it’s carpeting, LVP, or hardwood—can help your home feel cozier and full of style.

Replacing and Adding Light Fixtures

At some point during the long winter months, we can suffer from the winter blues. There’s something about the cold weather that affects our mood. New lighting can help us get out of that negative mindset.

Proper lighting can help us feel energized, focused, and relaxed. New and additional light fixtures—especially LED lighting that is brighter—can trick our bodies into thinking we’re seeing natural light. Replacing your home’s lighting can also help you save on your energy bills, and who doesn’t love that?
